Slate - For Internal Use
To ensure that you get a flat slate floor the best thing to do is to grade the tiles on thickness before you start to fix them.
If the slate is not calibrated by thickness, grade the tiles by thickness. Lay the tiles on to a 100% bed of adhesive starting with the thicker tiles. To find a suitable tile adhesive for your project use our Tile Adhesive Selector; choosing 'natural stone' as the tile type.
Apply one coat ofLithofin MN Stain-Stop to the fixed tiles to start the sealing process.
Grout the tiles as normal.
Apply another two coats of Lithofin MN Stain-Stop, which will give you fully sealed but matte finished slate tiles.
To achieve a soft sheen, you should add a couple of coats of Lithofin Multi-Seal. This process will need to be repeated every 9 to 12 months to maintain the soft sheen effect.
To look after your tiles, we recommend using Lithofin Easy-Care when cleaning. Lithofin Easy-Care is a cleaning solution that you add to a bucket of water and is specifically designed to clean your floor without stripping away the protective sealants that you have applied.
Slate - For External Use
Firstly, ensure that the slate you will be using for external use is frost proof. When you know that it is frost proof, follow steps 1 - 4 above.
